Siuslaw River South Slough
The South Slough area of the Siuslaw River has a rich history, from Indigenous Siuslaw and Coos peoples' deep connection to the resource-rich estuary for millennia, to the disruption by Gold Rush settlers and forced removals in the 1850s, to its modern designation as a National Estuarine Research Reserve (SSNERR) for scientific study and conservation, protecting vital wetlands and forests vital for salmon and biodiversity, even as the area saw logging and agricultural changes before significant restoration efforts.
